Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) is a large group of genetic diseases in which the retina gradually degenerates over time, causing a progressive loss of vision. This early-onset variant of the disease, known as gPRA or gPRA^SPD, is found in the Schapendoes. It is caused by a recessive mutation to the gene CCDC66. A related variant of gPRA is also found in the Portuguese Water Dog.
Caratteristiche cliniche
I cani Schapendoes colpiti appaiono normali quando sono giovani, ma sviluppano gPRA a un'età di esordio tra i 2 e i 5 anni. All'inizio della malattia, i cani colpiti sono ciechi di notte, mancando della capacità di regolare la loro visione per amma la luce; più tardi, anche la loro visione diurno fallisce. Questo processo di degenerazione completa del fotorecettore richiede fino a 2 anni.
