Informazioni generali

Dwarfism is an autosomal recessive disorder in Friesian horses. The Friesian dwarf phenotype is characterised by a disproportionate growth with reduced bone length of limbs and ribs while the size of the head and length of the back appear normal.

Caratteristiche cliniche

The Friesian dwarf phenotype is characterised by a disproportionate growth with reduced bone length of limbs and ribs. The size of the head and length of back are normal. Affected horses exhibit hyperextension of the fetlock joints of all limbs with varying degrees of severity. In dwarf foals flexor tendon laxity (which is often seen in newborn foals of all breeds), fails to recover and instead tends to increase further during aging. As a consequence, these dwarfs develop an abnormal gait.
